ABSTRACT: This study examined the impact of early childhood trauma on educational attainment. The objectives were to: (1) evaluate the correlation between childhood trauma and academic performance, (2) assess the long-term effects of trauma on cognitive development, and (3) determine the effectiveness of trauma-informed educational practices. A survey design was chosen to gather comprehensive data from educators, parents, and affected individuals, providing a holistic view of the issue. A sample size of 200 participants, including teachers, parents, and young adults who experienced trauma, was selected using purposive sampling. The case study focused on primary schools in Lagos State, Nigeria. Findings revealed that early childhood trauma significantly hindered academic performance and cognitive development, leading to lower educational attainment. Trauma-informed educational practices were found to mitigate some adverse effects, promoting better academic outcomes. It was recommended that educational institutions implement trauma-informed practices and provide training for educators to support traumatized children effectively.
